The Government has awarded £6.6bn in contracts to build the new High Speed 2 (HS2) railway line
With the construction work due to start next year, the contracts cover the first phase of HS2, the new line being built between London and Birmingham and is expected to create at least 16,000 jobs.
High Speed 2 is the planned high speed railway that will link London, Birmingham, the East Midlands, Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester together. The first phase of the railway due to open in December 2026 and HS2 is to be fully complete by 2033. The number of passengers travelling by rail in the UK has more than doubled over the past two decades and, as a result, the Government has committed record levels of investment to improve capacity, with £56bn earmarked for the HS2 project.
The trains themselves will be capable of speeds of up to 250mph with the Department for Transport stating that there will be almost 15,000 seats an hour between London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds – said to be three times the current capacity.
